Uptown Tea was a lovely little shop. A nice place to meet others and had private rooms within in. The outside was well kept and the inside was just as neat. Tea, coffee, pastries... It was a cafe that knew how to cater. This particular day appeared to be slightly less busy in the shop. All of the ornate white tables that stood alone seemed to have one to none sitting at them. Usually they were filled. Though it was quite early still. Even the cases along the counter still quite fresh. The aroma was pleasing in here.
__
Reese would be seated at one of the tables. A small cup of coffee rested just ahead on the table. Her emerald eyes would wander and then stare back ahead. A satchel rested on her lap as even though this was a good area, she feared for the contents inside getting in the wrong hands. The female had platinum hair, though it was far from her natural color. All her clothing would be form fitting apart from her trench coat. Reese's sweater was white and pants were were black. There was a white design on the left side of the blue vest she wore over the sweater . Eerie to say the least as it appeared to look as a being with it's mouth stitched shut. Perhaps it had some hidden meaning.
"Where the hell is he?" She'd mutter, a sigh slipping out soon after.

"I'm being perfectly honest. I could definitely see you working at our firm." Carver's deep voice carried through the sound of clanking glasses and idle chatter. "I think you'd be a perfect fit." he said, drawing out the last two words as his eyes looked over the woman who stood beside him. She let out a laugh and began digging around in her purse. She produced a small scrap of paper and handed it to the man before giving him a sultry smile and continuing on her way. Carver chuckled as he watched her go, pocketing the scrap of paper as he made his way closer to Reese's table. "Sorry if I'm late." he apologized, taking up a spot opposite of the blonde haired woman. "I got a bit distracted. "
Carver was dressed in a similar fashion. A crisp, white dress shirt fitted over his upper body accented by a hooded pea coat. His black slacks were pressed to perfection and his black leather shoes shined to the point were he could see his reflection in them. He would have seemed like your typical, upper class business associate if it wasn't for his long, red hair that reached past his shoulders and obscured the right side of his face. He presented Reese with his most charming smile, flashing two rows of pearly white teeth, though it didn't quite seem to reach the right corner of his mouth. "I hope that I didn't keep you waiting too long."

Reese's expression said it all. Clearly she wasn't amused to say the least. "Don't worry about keeping me from work. I'm sure my people won't mind me being gone. I mean it's not like -I- am in charge of all them or anything. Bet they can do just fine without me unless that idiot I need to replace messes up again. Oh, but that's fine. I've got all the time in the world for you." Her tone was mixed between sarcasm and perhaps slight playfulness. Obviously, she took the steps ahead of time in case the meeting took longer than expected. She was just a call away as well. Though hopefully nothing went wrong.
The empty cup would be pushed aside as she offered the man a small smirk after her words. "Though I suppose we should get started, yes? I mean, we have much to discuss before the election takes place.. We clearly need to figure out who we'll be 'voting' for." There were very few she could trust right now and he was one of them. Not a lot of good candidates were up for the choosing either so they best figure out this whole ordeal now.

That was why Carver enjoyed Reese's company so much. That habit of her's to put a playful twist on most things. Sure, he knew that there were times when he would wear down her nerves to the point were that vanished, but he appreciated all the same. There weren't many people who would willingly put up with his antics. "Aww," he cooed, "I'm so touched that you can still make time in your busy schedule to meet with little old me." He leaned forward, resting his chin in the palm of his right hand. His eyes seemed to go all doe eyed. The look last for a moment before he cackled and leaned back in his chair.
The remnant of a smile remained on a face as he fidgeted in his seat. "Jokes aside, I suppose that we should get on with that bit of business." Carver closed his eyes for a moment and thought. It was odd, playing Kingmaker, choosing someone to lead the city and keep the peace. He never once dreamed things would have come this far or developed quite how they did. He shrugged the feeling off. "I think we've got a few good candidates here." He half opened his eyes, looking at the table. "No one particularly outshines the others in my opinion." He ran through his list of candidates in his head, cataloging his dealings with each of them. No one he'd trust completely, but a few good men and women among the bunch... A few.

Reese shook her head. Often she wondered how she was still friends with someone like him. There wasn't a lot there that was overall appealing to her. Yet, here she was. Even since they were kids she found herself chained to him in a way. Strangely, they didn't seem to fight as often as she thought they would. At least not since they'd gotten older. Another sigh slipped out. They had real business to do for a change.
"Follow me."
At the words, the satchel on her lap was picked up. Moments later Reese stood and walked to the back of the shop and into a door next to one that said "Staff Only". In the room were more tables and then another door. She strode past the long tables and rows of chairs to the second door. This required a pass code which she entered before opening it and walking in. This new room looked liked a room used for questioning. How odd for a Cafe to have one, right? But this was just a private room that some people were allowed to use for meetings if they had the right connections. Since this was business the public couldn't hear, this was the best place for it.
She took a seat at the table and unzipped her satchel. Several files were pulled out as well as a laptop. "I've narrowed down the options." There were about three specific files on the table once she sorted them. Clearly this research had taken her hours to obtain. Hopefully he was pleased.

Carver didn't question Reese's command. He sparsely made any sound at all as he got up and trailed after her. The new setting was familiar to him. He had often used it when he was first getting started in his business. He preferred to meet his clients in person and he'd seen many city officials in this small room before. It was the first time that he'd stood in this room with Reese. His red eyes trailed towards her as she dug through her files. It was eerie how similar it was to the interrogation rooms she was probably used to.
He took strode closer to the table and lifted up the files she had presented. His eyes flicked over them quickly, the information in each being stored in the back of his mind to be recalled later. Reese certainly had a knack for collecting information. There was a lot here that wasn't exactly public knowledge and even a few things that Carver hadn't known himself. To his credit, he knew a few things about each of the candidates that Reese hadn't been able to dig up. He saw himself mentioned in one of there files. It was a man he'd had prior dealings with. He scowled, remembering his time in the man's employment and shuffled his file to the bottom. He sat them down, resting his hands on the table.
"You did some good work." he said, looking up at Reese. He felt a hint of pride for her. He wanted to make a joke about her research skills in high school, but he bit his tongue. "I wouldn't say they're the best fit, but they're certainly the best of the hand we've been dealt." He placed his hand on the top file and slid it forward. "He's my first choice." Carver had come to the meeting knowing which candidate that he would push for. He'd had his people do a bit of their own research. Their files weren't printed on paper though, but tucked away in Carver's skull.
He straightened up and clasped his hands behind his back. "I've had dealings with one of them, as you've clearly noted, and I don't like the way he conducts business. The man doesn't have a subtle bone in his body. We'd be ousted to the public in a month at the latest if we choose him." Carver was exaggerating a tad, but the man had left him with a bad impression.

"You're still just as big a drama queen as you always were." She snickered and smirked. Carver was a bit of a loud mouth after all which he was likely to be aware of now. After a moment she looked down at his choice and gave a nod. "Probably the best option we've got. I mean, we can't just be in charge of -everything-.." Again she snickered. In a way, they really were in charge of it all. Though she was trying to pretend that she wasn't breaking the law by rigging the election with her criminal of a friend. She knew there was no way Carver was as innocent as he could play off. It didn't matter to her though. He was the one person that was always there for her over the years.
"The election can't come soon enough, honestly. I'd resign now if only I could. The work is getting to become too much for me. " This was the first time that Reese told anyone that she was going to quit the force. She had enough saved up and had secured a way to receive funds and inside information without being in the force. Why should she have to stress over being the leader of two groups? Silence was her baby. She would make it what she wanted it. Nobody would be over her. That alone was a full time job. "I'm sure you've noted I've gotten a logo I'm debating on too." At that she motioned toward the eerie being with the stitched shut mouth upon her vest. "Things should go smoothly.." The last part was mostly to remain calm. After the election, she was going to have to deal with a lot more, put making the election work without getting caught was a big enough task. Plus she was leaving the force after which might not look good.
"So, have you figured out what it is that you're going to do after this? I mean, you haven't told me much about it. Makes me feel a bit left out.." At this she frowned, trying to look hurt. Though she wasn't really -that- hurt. Carver kept things from her as she kept things from him. Reese just hoped he wouldn't do anything stupid because it'd be hard to get him out of trouble once she left the force. It'd be a shame to see him get locked up. But was she actually crazy enough to break him out? Probably. It'd been awhile since he'd seen her wild side, but it was still there.

Reese's off handed comment elicited a small grin from Carver. He'd almost forgotten who he was locked in this room with. It wasn't one of the stuff businessmen that he was so accustomed to. It was Reese. The girl who was there at his tenth birthday when nobody else showed up. The one who cheered him up after Vanessa Wilkins cheated on him in the ninth grade. The woman who he'd found years after losing contact with. He felt the tension he'd been displaying leave his body. He unclasped his hands and ended up shoving them in his pockets. "Most people enjoy the dramatics. It adds an air of mystery and intrigue." he said arcing an eyebrow for a more dramatic effect.
He nodded in agreement with her. He was devoting a lot of time to this scheme, leaving his secretary in charge. It wasn't that he didn't have any confidence in her. He simply prefered to see certain things through himself. The nodding stopped when she mentioned quitting the force. His jaw almost dropped at the mention of this. "What?" he said just a bit too loudly. "Why didn't you say anything about this before?" he asked, his usually cheerful features twisting into a scowl. Sure, he had a habit of hiding certain things from Reese. After all, he didn't exactly play by the rules most of the time and if she could hold on to her plausible deniability she wouldn't have had to go down with him, if it ever came to that.
This was something different though. It wasn't business, it was personal."I thought you liked being a cop." he tried to reign in his feelings with some mild success. He smoothed his features into a something a bit more neutral and sighed. If she didn't tell him it had to be for a good reason. He distracted himself from his feelings by eyeing her new insignia, proudly displayed on her vest. He rolled his eye at the cartoon like creature. "Your sense of style's hardly changed at all." He leaned into the table, using it to support his weight.
"And don't worry so much about it. You've gotta stay calm when it comes to these things. Try not to think about it. Honestly, if I sat around and thought of all the illegal things I do I'd be a nervous wreck. " he teased. It had been a long time since Reese had shown the same spirit she had when they were younger. Carver had come to miss the carefree young woman she had been. Almost always a willing accomplice for whatever dumb plan he hatched and even if she wasn't it usually didn't take much convincing. When she asked about his plans after they had finished with everything he shrugged.
"Well, I just finished rigging an election so I'll probably look for the next challenge after that. I might try and knock over Fort Knox or maybe I'll try and organize all of the crime in the city." he said sarcastically. That last one was far from the truth. Most, if not all of, the white collar crimes had something to do with Carver. Petty theft just wasn't his style. It was too simple and straight forward. It lacked the subtlety he'd learned to enjoy.

"As if you could do better!" She scowled and closed her trench coat so the vest was concealed. Though it could be noted that it fit a bit smug around her chest. Clearly she wasn't as flat as half the people that wore such a thing. Though after a moment she relaxed and sighed. Of course Carver could do something better. His style was better than her own. It always had been. She was a bit childish and cookie cutter in terms of things she'd wear. Either looked too old or like she was trying hard to be young again. Reese wasn't trying to appear as either.
"I like my job, but I can't balance leading two things anymore. It wears me down. I'll have people on the force that will still help me. ..Mostly help me help you." She paused and grinned. "You're lucky we're friends or I'd turn you in," Reese couldn't help but to tease him some. Truth be told, she would be very lonely if she did that. He wasn't someone she'd willingly push out of her life. "You know, before you go on that crime spree of yours, we should do something fun. Lately it's just been business or a drink at the bar when we meet. After the election...we should celebrate before I leave the force. You know..in case you get too out of control so I can still save you." Reese snorted. The files would be placed back into the bag, but the laptop wasn't. She leaned forward to open it and turn it on. Several moments later she'd click on several things then open a folder. A movie would be selected. "Fun like this.."
As play was clicked, the movie played. It was one of them when they were younger. Reese had the weird idea to randomly record everything one day like it was a documentary.
"I'm Reese Chandler and this is my best friend forever Carver. He likes to do bad things but it's okay because if I go with then I can get us both out of trouble too!" Giggling would be heard as the video was shaky. Her and Carver were running and apparently jumped over a fence. Even in younger days she still wanted to protect him. "Today we're going to play a prank on our neighbor and take some stuff from him!" More giggling. It would cut to a scene of Reese pretending to be hurt and the neighbor running out to help her. As she faked being in pain, Carver would be noted going into the house and taking a few things. One of which was a stuffed animal. Reese had wanted it for the longest time. After several moments when he ran off toward a tree, she suddenly was well again. She ran off and back to Carver, the movie screen shaking the whole time as she did. When she got back, he gave her the stuffed kitten and she hugged him.
Reese paused a moment and laughed. "Okay, maybe not like that. But I found the video on one of my old cards the other day. Thought maybe you'd like it." At that she appeared embarrassed and looked away. A faint blush on her cheeks. "But it has been awhile since we've done something fun.." Truth be told, she still had that stuffed animal.

The sound of a familiar voice drifted from the speakers. He smiled faintly as he shifted to get a better look at the video. How long had it been since Reese had sounded like that? Years? Decades? He could scarcely believe that the video had survived all of these years. He remembered this one in particular. It was one of the first times that Reese had decided to film their escapades. The two of them couldn't have been out of middle school. He laughed at Reese's introduction. It was true enough. Carver had always been a trouble maker. It had never been for profit or out of malice, but for the sheer enjoyment. He'd always been able to see how the world worked. How plucking one string caused another to stir, how one action could set into work a series of others. He loved seeing how people would react to the plans he set into action. That and how they were best friends forever.
He glanced sideways at Reese for a moment before looking away. It was so strange and so immature to say now. Carver was approaching his twenty sixth birthday and he could still say with no doubts that Reese was his best friend and always would be, no matter what happened between them. She'd always looked out for him and made sure that he didn't get himself too hurt. He, in turn, always tried his best to take care of her and be there for her in her times of need. He recounted the fights he'd gotten into, the people he'd pranked, the one's he'd hurt just to warn other's not to hurt her.
He watched the video contently, longing for his youth and feeling a bit homesick once it came to an end. He hadn't seen the cat in the video for years, but knowing Reese it was probably tucked away somewhere safe. He turned towards her, noticing the faint blush on her cheeks. "We should see if we can find the rest of those. It'd be nice to see where I started to corrupt you and turn you down the path of villany." He smirked, remembering some of their more daring adventures. Carver wasn't fond of petty theft now, but in his youth there was no question about it.
"But we should do something fun. Maybe get out of this town for awhile. I can't recall the last time you took a vacation once you joined the force and I'm sure your merry band won't need you right away. We could take a few days off." he said, trying to tempt her with some well deserved rest. Reese would run herself ragged if left to her own devices. She always seemed like she needed to carry the world on her shoulders. It was Carver's job to make sure she set it down every once in awhile.

Reese would remain looking away for a few moments. She would slowly turn to face him once again. "Bet they rest are at my house somewhere," she muttered. "It would be nice to leave this city though. It's been awhile since I have. Might be hard to leave once I quit anyway." With that she shrugged. "If you could pick anywhere to go and anything to do...what would it be?" Her emerald eyes would search for his. Criminal and a cop. Such a duo should never happen though she had no complaints.
She tried to think of where she wanted to go and wanted to do. Out of all the choices, her mind had decided on one. The place she and Carver met. Though the place that they met was likely destroyed by now. Last she knew that town and whole area had been off limits. A sigh slid out. Why was it she felt the need to go there with him so badly? It's almost like she felt something was there and had to be found. Though what was it? Reese sometimes felt as if Carver and her had a secret that neither of them could remember. In fact, she'd even dreamt about it. Though it was never revealed. Was it a place? A person? An object? She didn't know. The investigator wondered if he ever felt the same but wouldn't ask.
"I wouldn't mind...going home. Surely we have enough time before the election to do that. And then we can do what it is that you want to do as well. How's that sound? I mean, sure that town is probably in ruins, but we had some good times there. It'd be a shame to just..never see it again."

Home... that was such an odd concept for Carver now. It had been years since he had even thought of the podunk town that he and Reese grew up in. He mulled it over, chewing on the inside of his cheek as he did so. Was there anything left there for him? The memories he had of it left a bitter taste in his mouth. If it had not been for Reese he probably would have gotten out of there alot sooner. The idea of going back to the small town was not to appealing, but he saw the look in Reese's eyes as he turned to meet her gaze. She had her heart set on it.
Carver had always been able to talk her into something, but he could scarcely remember a time that he had been able to talk her out of it.He ran a hand through his long red hair, moving it out of the left side of his face. "Alright, " he responded, beaming at Reese. "Let's do it. Lets go back home." Carver had not been home since he had left. It wasn't just bad memories that kept him away. It was a feeling.
He felt as if something terrible was there, lying in wait. He had nightmares about the town. Unconsciously he reached up and touched the obscured portion of his face. He could never make out the meaning of the dream, but it set him on edge. He snappex out oc his thoughts and moved his hanx. "And after, we'll do what i want. Whicb will reman a surprise until we get there." A mischievous smirk tuggeed at his lips and sent his eyes sparkling.

Reese would flash a smile. "Alright. I'm ready to go now if you are." Truth be told, it would only take a few moments for her to pack and her house wasn't too far away. Carver hadn't been to her new place yet. She'd moved quite recently. The woman was pretty sure that she told him,but not completely. Her new place was smaller, but she did it to save money. So much was being poured into the facility she had bought for her forming organization. If she wanted to live without sleeping in one of the staff rooms, a downsize was needed. Her old house made her feel lonely anyway. It was far too large for one person anyway. Reese had accepted that she would be lonely a lot as well. Work never allowed much of a social life.
Still as eager as she was, it appeared that he wasn't. Maybe what she thought was there actually existed. Something they both knew but forgot. Carver hadn't seemed hesitant like this before. Though she would try to brush the thought away. 'Focus on the good' she would tell herself. "It will probably be just us there anyway. I mean, you heard what happened to that place when we were in high school. How it got destroyed.." She wasn't sure how much that would actually help. "And don't worry, just to be safe, I'll bring my weapon stash." Why did she feel the need for such protection when the town was said to be destroyed and abandoned? Would her words help Carver?
The laptop would be shut off and closed. Moments later it'd be shoved in a bag with the files from earlier. Her satchel would be closed once more. Upon standing, her trench coat was tied tight around her. Now the satchel would be slung over her shoulder. She looked confident yet uneasy all at the same time. The only thing she could really think now was 'Carver, we should go now.' Yet she didn't know why she got that thought.

Abandoned... Yeah, Carver knew very well that their home town was now a ghost town. That fact only strengthened his desire to avoid it. He felt as if he'd be returning to the scene of a crime. He couldn't tell if he was the victim or the perpetrator of this crime though. He'd go though. He knew that it meant a lot to Reese. Besides, if they left now it meant that they'd be able to do what he wanted all the sooner. He began to think of all the things that he'd need to bring along and take care of. He stopped when Reese spoke up again, turning his plans on their head.
Now? Carver was slightly caught off guard by Reese's willingness to just drop everything and leave. They had a lot going on within the town and needed to make sure that whatever business they had to finish was handled appropriately. He knew that that would not happen now. Her mind was set and he bags were all but packed. He laughed at her gungho attitude, rubbing the back of his neck. "We might as well. No time like the present, right?" He straightened up and leaned his head to the left, eliciting several pops. "I'd have to head back downtown and get packed though." He reached into the confines of his pea coat and searched for several moments before pulling out his phone.
It was a slick, black touchscreen, built more for work than for play. He made several gestures on it, the sounds of his thumbs tapping against the screen being the only other sound in the room as Reese shuffled about, preparing to leave. He clicked the send key and was rewarded with a reply in less time than it took for her to pack up her belongings. He read the reply over a few times before sighing, pinching his nose out of annoyance. "Would you mind if I came along and got a ride back downtown. My driver is at his daughter's soccer game and I'd rather not take a taxi back. Last time I took one things got... interesting." he said, thinking back to the incident.

Reese watched him. She was almost worried that he wouldn't want to go through with it. When he agreed, a small smile form. "Fine with me. I'll show you my new place on the way." Might as well show him. Chances were he'd want to know where she was if he needed to find her. "We'll be back in time to for the election. I mean, it is next week.. And I assume your plan will get us in trouble so I need to still be in the force during it.." A small grin would be offered to him. Though, in order to make sure he really wouldn't back out, she took Carver by the arm. She may have ended up dragging him down the hall to some degree. It wasn't the simplest task as her bag constantly hit her side which irritated her.
Not much of a choice was allowed as she quickly rushed him into the car. "And another reason for going now is there's a case I'm trying to avoid being stuck on.I mean, I'm quitting soon and this seems like a chain one.. I don't have another year to waste on a chain series of cases. Sure, I'm lead, but it wears me down." A sigh slipped out. At the point she said this, they would be well down the road. Reese loved to speed too. Her car actually didn't seem to mind either. She drove a black corvette with the windows tinted to a degree that really wasn't legal as they were a true pain for others to see in, especially at night. Her left over college fund as well as a few side jobs she never told Carver about allowed her to pay for this. He'd only actually seen her other car until today though. It was one she'd had for years. Nothing too special. A simple red Honda Accord. Which would now be able to be spotted in her driveway as she parked. "And this is it."
At that she would get out of the car and go up the steps. It was a small house that could only easily fit two people at the most. It was better for Reese to have this small place. Less room, cheaper, less lonely. Though it had a large garage which was how nobody would know about her other car as she didn't leave it out. Once Carver had finally caught up, she opened the white door to the small brick house and stepped inside. Upon looking around a few things could be easily noted. Her floors were wooden with a giant rug in the center of the floor. There were a couple chairs and a couch that all seemed a bit old fashioned. Reese preferred smoother looks, but truly did downgrade. A bookshelf was packed full on a wall opposite of the fire place. "Not as nice as the old place, but it works for me." A shrug was given as she walked off to her bedroom.
A couple minutes passed and her bags were packed. Though with the speed it took, it almost seemed as if she had been packed already. The files in the satchel bag she brought with were locked away in a drawer and the laptop switched out for another. She had one for both work and free time. That would now be in the satchel along with a few medicines just in case they got sick and a first aid kit just because she was thorough. "Ready?" She looked over to him. Though as she did she spotted the stuffed kitten and felt an urge to bring it. She didn't know why, but took it from the the shelf it was on and shoved it into the bag that held her clothes.
